Programs » Youth Law Project

Children and young adults are both the most hopeful segment of our population and disparately targeted by the criminal justice system. The Youth Law Project provides the benefits of NDS's team-based representation to those aged 7 through 18 who are criminally accused, whether they are prosecuted as adults in Supreme Court or as delinquents in Family Court. An interdisciplinary entity, the Project has the support and collaboration of a social worker and investigator, law students from NYU School of Law (from an advanced colloquium co-taught by Elsie Chandler and Peggy Cooper Davis, the Director of the school's nationally recognized Lawyering Program), Elizabeth Fischer, a Staff Attorney and Equal Justice Works Fellow, and a Ph.D. criminal justice candidate from Cambridge University, England.

Our goal is to work with the accused young adult, including his or her family and community, in the broadest manner by involving educational advocacy, social services (in partnership with community-based agencies), and the highest quality legal representation.
